National Bird Week

By 18 October 2021News

This week, October 18 – 24, is National Bird Week. A week to inspire all Australians to take action and get involved in bird conservation – even from your own backyard. πŸ’•

We’re kicking it off by showcasing one our favourite birds Jezzabelle, the red-tailed black cockatoo.πŸ’•

Jezzy was hand-reared by us here at the castle so that way we can educate people about their species and how people at home can do things to help them out.

Here in the Northern Rivers we are home to a Coastal Sub-Species of Red-Tail Black Cockatoo and unfortunately due to the high demand to live in this area deforestation and not having enough nesting hallows has lead the sub-species to become critically endangered in the Northern Rivers. A count showed that there’s less than 10 pairs left.

Some things you can do to help the Red-Tails and majority of our other native bird species is by doing some research into putting up nesting boxes in native trees around your home and property and advocating for keeping our native rainforests.

Come and see Jezzabelle and more of our wonderful birds at The Castle with our incredible bird show at 12:15pm daily. Our dedicated keepers will inform you about how your actions can help prevent a species becoming endangered, or worst become extinct. πŸ¦…πŸ°πŸ’•
